In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian giltwood overmantel mirror is a large wall mirror designed to sit above a fireplace mantelpiece, featuring carved wooden frames coated in gesso and gold leaf. Originating in the 19th century, these mirrors often incorporate Rococo Revival motifs, crestings, and acanthus leaf decorations to reflect light across reception rooms.

19th-century gilt mirrors were constructed using softwood timber frames carved with decorative detail or layered with moulded gesso. Gold leaf was applied over a clay bole base using either water gilding for a burnished finish or oil gilding for durability, framing hand-blown or early plate mirror glass.

Authentic antique giltwood mirrors exhibit natural craquelure in the gesso surface, subtle wear revealing the reddish bole layer underneath, and oxidised backboards with hand-cut timber panels. Original glass plates often show light foxing or subtle distortion consistent with historical manufacturing techniques.

A large giltwood overmantel mirror functions as a focal point above a mantelpiece, console table, or sideboard. Positioning ornate gold gilding alongside simplified modern furnishings creates a balanced contrast between historical craftsmanship and contemporary interior architecture.

Giltwood frames should be cleaned exclusively using a soft, dry ostrich feather duster or camel-hair brush to remove dust from carved recesses. Liquid cleaners, water, and commercial polishes must be avoided, as moisture dissolves historic gesso and lifts delicate gold leaf.
