French Louis XVI seating is characterised by neoclassical design principles, including straight lines, geometric symmetry, fluted tapered legs, and subtle carved motifs inspired by Greco-Roman architecture.

Framing was typically carved from solid hardwoods such as beech or walnut, finished with water gilding or oil gilding using genuine gold leaf, and fitted with jute webbing, horsehair stuffing, and natural calico layers.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery using mortise and tenon joints, natural wear to the gold leaf revealing reddish-brown bole underneath, and signs of hand-carving along the wooden trim rather than cast resin moulding.
