A banjo barometer, or wheel barometer, is a wall-mounted instrument featuring a shaped wooden casing reminiscent of a banjo that measures atmospheric pressure using a mercury tube and pulley system. Popularised during the late 18th and 19th centuries, particularly in Georgian and Victorian Britain, they served as both functional meteorological tools and decorative household furniture.

Traditional banjo barometers were constructed primarily with mahogany, rosewood, or walnut veneer cases housing a glass mercury tube. The dials were typically silvered brass with engraved lettering, often accompanied by brass-encased thermometers, hygrometers, and spirit levels.

Authentic antique barometers often feature silvered brass dials with hand-engraved atmospheric markings, period mercury or spirit thermometer tubes, and natural age-related patina on the timber. Look for original brass bezels, swan-neck or pedimented tops, and maker names engraved near the base or on the main dial.

An antique wheel barometer works exceptionally well mounted on a feature wall in a hallway, study, or dining room alongside framed botanical prints or architectural drawings. Its vertical form adds architectural height when positioned in narrow wall spaces or beside traditional doorways.

Keep the barometer mounted securely upright on an internal wall away from direct sunlight, radiators, or drafts to avoid warping the timber veneer. Clean the wooden case gently with a soft dry cloth and high-grade beeswax, avoiding harsh chemical cleaners near the glass or brass elements.
