Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

The banjo barometer is a wall-mounted instrument named for its distinctive keyhole or instrument shape. Originating in the late eighteenth century in England, it was widely produced throughout the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries during Georgian and Victorian revivals.

Georgian Revival barometers are typically constructed with a mahogany or walnut veneer casing, silvered or brass register plates, blown glass thermometer tubes, and cast brass bezels and finials.

Authentic period pieces show signs of hand-cut dovetails, original mercury or alcohol thermometer tubes, patinated brass fittings, and age-related wear on the wood grain and silvered dials. Reproduction or revival pieces often feature aneroid mechanisms rather than mercury tubes.

A banjo barometer works well hung vertically in a narrow wall space, hallway, entrance foyer, or home library. Pairing mahogany instruments with dark wood paneling, brass wall sconces, or framed botanical prints creates a classic aesthetic.

Keep the instrument away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent the mahogany casing from warping or cracking. Clean the wood casing with a soft cloth and beeswax polish, and wipe brass fittings gently without harsh chemicals.
