Georgian Mahogany Inlaid Sideboard

18th century
Description

A fine Georgian mahogany inlaid sideboard of elegant proportions and classic late 18th-century design.

Raised upon square tapered legs terminating in spade feet, the sideboard displays refined form and balanced symmetry. It is fitted with two oak-lined drawers and a cupboard, offering practical storage.

The decoration is particularly attractive, featuring inlaid quarter fans, satinwood crossbanding, and delicate boxwood line inlays throughout. The top is centred with a beautifully executed inlaid fan and further enhanced with satinwood crossbanding, creating a striking focal point.

The cupboard, positioned to the left-hand side, is traditionally intended for the storage of used plates during service, reflecting the practical design of the period.

Presented in good overall condition, this is a decorative and functional example of Georgian craftsmanship.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in late eighteenth-century Britain, Georgian sideboards were developed to provide surface area for serving meals and internal storage for dining accessories. Influenced by designers such as George Hepplewhite and Thomas Sheraton, these pieces typically feature light proportions, marquetry or stringing inlay, and tapered square or turned legs.

Primary surfaces were constructed using solid mahogany or rich mahogany veneers laid over secondary woods such as pine, oak, or deal. Decorative details featured boxwood or satinwood stringing, while drawer pulls were typically cast in brass. Dovetail joints were cut by hand, resulting in narrow, precise pin configurations.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-cut dovetails, hand-planed rear boards, and irregular tool marks on unexposed wooden surfaces. Natural timber shrinkage over centuries often causes slight ovalisation of round veneer panels, and oxidation creates uneven tonal variations on drawer linings and structural undersides.

A Georgian sideboard functions well when contrasted with minimal interior backgrounds. Placing modern abstract artwork above the top surface and flanking it with contemporary ceramic lamps creates a balanced juxtaposition between historic woodwork and modern decorative elements.

Maintain the finish by dusting with a soft, dry cotton cloth and applying a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice annually. Position the item away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber movement, veneer cracking, and fading of the original wood finish.
