Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Pioneered by Michael Thonet in the mid-19th century, bentwood furniture utilised a revolutionary steam-bending technique to curve solid beechwood into lightweight, durable seating. By the Edwardian era, these designs were widely produced across Europe for cafes, bistros, and commercial offices due to their structural integrity.

Traditional bentwood armchairs are constructed from steam-bent beechwood, supported by circular structural stretchers. The seating and back panels often feature woven cane, moulded plywood, or leather upholstery fixed with brass upholstery studs.

Authentic pieces often feature paper makers labels or paper stamps underneath the seat frame, along with impressed factory marks such as Thonet or Mundus. Look for characteristic steam-bent joinery, smooth curved arm supports, and original metal fixings.

A bentwood armchair functions exceptionally well as a desk chair alongside a contemporary oak or steel writing desk. It can also be paired with modern upholstered seating in a living room to introduce contrasting texture and organic curved lines.

Keep the wood frame clean by dusting with a soft cloth and applying beeswax polish periodically to maintain moisture in the timber. Leather upholstery should be treated with a specialized leather conditioner to prevent drying or cracking, and the chair should be kept away from direct heat sources.
