Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Longcase clocks, commonly known as grandfather clocks, originated in the mid-17th century following the invention of the pendulum mechanism. The Westminster chime melody, derived from Saint Mary the Great in Cambridge, became a standard musical chime feature in floor-standing clocks during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

Traditional longcase clock cabinets were primarily crafted from solid hardwoods such as oak, mahogany, and walnut. The internal movements typically consist of brass plates, steel arbors, cast brass weights, and glass panels within the trunk door to display the movement of the pendulum.

Authentic period longcase clocks feature weight-driven mechanical movements with hand-cut gear teeth, cast brass or silvered dials, and period-appropriate joinery such as hand-cut dovetails in the wooden casing. Signatures on the dial plate and original winding mechanisms further confirm period authenticity.

A longcase clock serves as a focal architectural piece in an entrance hall, formal hallway alcove, or home library. Pairing the dark timber casing with contemporary neutral wall colours or classic wood panelling highlights its historic profile.

The clock casing must be kept level on a firm surface to allow the pendulum to swing freely. Mechanical movements require periodic professional oiling and regular winding of the weight chains, while the oak cabinet should be dusted with a soft dry cloth and treated occasionally with natural beeswax.
