Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A longcase clock, commonly termed a grandfather clock, features a tall wooden cabinet enclosing a weight-driven pendulum movement. The case typically consists of three main sections: the hood housing the clock dial, the long trunk containing the weights and pendulum, and a solid plinth base.

English longcase clock cases were predominantly crafted from solid woods such as oak, mahogany, or walnut, sometimes featuring wood veneers or marquetry. The internal components typically utilised brass for the dials, spandrels, and movement gears, alongside steel for hands and pendulums.

Authentic longcase clocks display hand-engraved brass or painted sheet dials, original pendulum movements, and period joinery such as hand-cut dovetails and mortise-and-tenon joints. Maker marks or signatures engraved on the dial plate often indicate historical origins.

A longcase clock serves as a strong vertical anchor in traditional or transitional schemes. Placing the clock in an entrance hall, landing, or library corner creates a point of architectural interest while complementing dark timber furniture and neutral colour palettes.

To preserve the timber finish, dust the oak cabinet regularly with a soft cloth and apply beeswax sparingly once or twice a year. Keep the clock away from direct heat sources and extreme humidity variations to prevent warping of the wood.
