Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Popularised during the 18th century, fold-over tea tables were crafted for social tea gatherings, serving as narrow wall consoles when closed and opening into wider surfaces when supported by a swing-leg mechanism.

These tables typically utilise dense Cuban or West Indian mahogany timber, traditional hand-cut mortise-and-tenon joints, brass butt hinges, and gate-leg or rear swing-leg mechanisms to support the hinged leaf.

Authentic pieces display hand-planed undersides, original iron screws, evidence of timber shrinkage over time, and natural oxidisation along unvarnished interior frame sections.

It functions effectively against an entryway wall, behind a sofa, or in a hallway, supporting table lamps, ceramics, or framed artwork when kept in its closed position.

Regularly dust the timber with a soft, lint-free cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year, while avoiding direct sunlight and proximity to heat sources to prevent timber cracking.
