Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A sofa table is a long, narrow table designed to sit behind a sofa, traditionally featuring drop-leaf ends to extend surface space and small drawers for storage. Popularised in the late 18th and 19th centuries, Victorian examples often showcase ornate turned legs, quadruped bases, and rich wood veneers.

Cabinetmakers typically crafted Victorian sofa tables from solid mahogany or walnut, frequently incorporating flame or burr walnut veneers for decorative drawer fronts and tabletops. Construction often features hand-cut dovetail joints, brass castors, and turned pedestal or column supports.

Authentic Victorian pieces display signs of hand construction, such as irregular dovetail joints inside drawers, original brass castors, and age-appropriate wear to the underside frame. Additionally, original drop-leaf mechanisms generally utilise wooden hinges or iron rule joints typical of the mid-to-late 19th century.

A Victorian sofa table functions well positioned behind a contemporary couch or against a hallway wall as a console table. Modern styling often pairs the warm timber with neutral upholstery, sculptural ceramics, or framed contemporary artwork to balance classic and modern aesthetics.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year following the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber warping, veneer lifting, or finish fading.
