Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in the late Regency and George IV periods of the 1820s, sofa tables were designed to be placed directly behind a sofa or along a wall. They functioned as multi-purpose surfaces for reading, writing, and serving tea, often featuring drop-leaf flaps to extend the surface area when required.

Furniture makers of the George IV era primarily utilised high-grade Cuban or West Indian mahogany, valued for its stability and rich grain. Key structural elements often featured hand-dovetailed oak or pine drawer linings, turned stretchers, and solid brass castors or brass paw feet.

Authentic pieces display period construction techniques, including hand-cut dovetail joints, original wooden knobs or brass handles, and authentic wear to the wooden runners. Look for signs of natural age, such as slight shrinkage lines in the timber and patinated brass castors.

A sofa table can be placed behind a free-standing sofa to define open-plan living areas, or styled against a hall wall as a console table. It can be paired with table lamps, framed artwork, or decorative ceramics to balance contemporary decor with historic timber tones.

Preserve the natural timber finish by dusting regularly with a dry, soft cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish once or twice a year. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent timber warping or uneven fading.
