Harrington Antiques has dated this piece to the Before 1700 period.
The moulded arched cornice is centred with a shell motif above a large single glazed door opening to a shelved interior, all upon an oak base with a long frieze drawer raised upon thick barley twist legs, the whole joined by a cross stretcher. Working lock and key.

The top and base are a historic marriage; both elements fit snugly without gap nor snag. The old glass is full of wobbles and charm. There is evidence of sympathetic restorations and repairs in areas as one would expect, most notably some adaptations to the inside lip of the base in the form of risers to ensure the bookcase sits at the correct height when in situ.

The bookcase has outstanding proportions, narrow enough for a hall or dining room, yet imposing enough to hold its own in a larger space if required.
Outstanding colour throughout and boasting all the glowing hallmarks of its age.
