Antique French Ormolu Rococo Clock - Fully Restored

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1880 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully restored ~~

A superb original antique French Rococo clock by Samuel Marti. Formed of sinuous leafy curves with floral foliate swag all in finely gilded bronze. The clock stands on a beautifully styled base. The ormolu sunburst pendulum can be seen swinging through the opening in the front of the case.

The dial is porcelain enamel on copper with beautifully delicate floral swags between the letters. It is complete with its original finely fretted gilt brass hands. The rear door is also glazed to allow the movement to be seen.

The French movement is of high quality and is by Samuel Marti. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled by our clockmaker. Pendulum is original. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send you a link.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with slight wear and discolouration. The dial is also excellent with just some slight chipping around the Brocot shaft.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A French Rococo ormolu clock is a decorative timepiece featuring elaborate gilt-bronze casing characterized by asymmetrical scrolls, acanthus leaves, and naturalistic motifs popularized during the 18th and 19th centuries in France.

These clocks traditionally feature a gilt-bronze or cast brass case, a porcelain or enamelled dial, blued steel or brass hands, and a mechanical brass clock movement with a pendulum mechanism.

Authentic pieces often exhibit heavy, mercury-gilded cast bronze, fine hand-chased details, hand-painted enamel dials with French maker marks, and a pendulum movement stamped with serial numbers or foundry marks.

Position the clock as a focal point atop a marble fireplace mantel, a dark wood console table, or inside a curated bookshelf display to contrast ornate historic detail against clean, contemporary lines.

Clean the gilded surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth or brush, avoiding harsh chemical polishes or water which can damage original gilding, and have the mechanical movement serviced regularly by a professional horologist.
