Japy Freres Louis Xvi Gilt Bronze Antique French Clock

19th century
Description

~ French - Circa 1890 ~

~~ Excellent condition, fully overhauled ~~

A stunning original antique French gilt bronze clock by the renown maker Japy Frères. Of architectural form, the case finely cast in gilt-bronze with neoclassical ornament, surmounted by a twin-handled urn issuing a bouquet of flowers. To the sides are classical relief panels, and the whole raised on a plinth base with acanthus scroll feet.

The dial is also gilt bronze with 12 individual enamel cartouches and blued steel hands. Beneath the dial is a draped swag.

The French movement is by Japy Frères and is of the company's usual high quality. It is in excellent clean and running condition having been fully overhauled and tested by our clockmaker. Pendulum is a replacement. It runs for 8 days and strikes the hours and halves on a bell. We have a video of the clock, please ask and we will send it to you.

Condition of the case is excellent, the original gilding is beautifully clean and bright with some slight wear and discolouration. Dial is also excellent with just some slight nibbles to the winding holes and an occasional mark. The rear door is very slight distorted.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Louis XVI style mantel clocks feature classical architectural forms, symmetrical proportions, and decorative elements such as urns, garlands, and foliate swags inspired by Greco-Roman antiquity.

These timepieces were typically constructed from cast bronze finished with fire-gilded mercury coatings, housing brass clockwork movements and featuring hand-enameled dial cartouches.

Authentic movements frequently feature stamped maker medallions on the back plate, such as the Japy Freres seal, accompanied by corresponding serial numbers on the pendulum and movement frame.

Placing a gilt bronze timepiece on a stone fireplace mantelpiece, dark wood sideboard, or marble console table creates an anchor point that contrasts with modern architectural lines.

Dust gilt bronze surfaces gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding abrasive polishes, commercial chemicals, or water that can remove the original mercury gilding.
