Fine French Louis Xv–style Ormolu-mounted Bureau Plat

19th century
Description

A fine French Louis XV–style bureau plat of late 19th-century date, executed in richly figured mahogany and richly mounted with gilt bronze. The rectangular top is inset with a hand-tooled green leather writing surface, decorated with a gilt foliate border and central diamond motif, and framed by crossbanded mahogany within a molded ormolu edge.

The shaped frieze to the front houses three drawers with gently serpentine outlines, each fitted with ornate Rococo-style gilt bronze handles and escutcheons. The reverse is designed with corresponding faux drawer fronts, applied with matching ormolu mounts and centred by a decorative cartouche, enabling the desk to be placed freestanding while maintaining a fully finished presentation on all sides.

Finely cast gilt bronze mounts enrich each corner and descend into elegant cabriole legs, applied with scrolling foliate ormolu ornament and terminating in shaped sabots. The mounts are crisply chased and retain a warm gilded surface that contrasts attractively with the depth and figuring of the mahogany veneers. The drawer interiors are traditionally finished in oak and run smoothly.

Exemplifying the fluid lines and refined asymmetry associated with the Louis XV Rococo aesthetic, this bureau plat balances decorative richness with practical functionality.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A bureau plat is a flat-topped writing table featuring frieze drawers, originally introduced in late seventeenth-century France. The Louis XV style is characterised by curved cabriole legs, Rococo asymmetry, elaborate gilt-bronze (ormolu) mounts, and tool-embossed leather writing inserts.

Traditional construction incorporates a solid hardwood frame veneered with exotic timbers such as kingwood, tulipwood, or rosewood. Key decorative elements include cast and chased gilt-bronze ormolu mounts alongside gold-tooled leather writing surfaces.

Authentic period or high-quality revival pieces feature hand-cut dovetail drawer joints, heavy hand-chased brass or bronze mounts with chiselled details, and natural timber shrinkage consistent with age. Look for maker stamps or stamps from French guild cabinetmakers along the underside of the drawer rails.

Position the desk as a freestanding focal point in a home office or library space to showcase the rear and side mounts. Pair it with a contemporary desk chair or a understated minimalist backdrop to highlight the ornate gilt-bronze detailing.

Dust the gilt-bronze mounts regularly with a soft dry brush, avoiding liquid polishes that strip gilding or damage surrounding wood veneers. Treat the leather writing insert with specialized leather conditioner and keep the piece away from direct sunlight and radiators to prevent timber warping.
