19th century
Description

A late Victorian mahogany centre table of octagonal form. The stepped moulded top sits above a deep apron with shaped corner brackets, all raised on four turned and reeded legs on original castors, united by a striking cross stretcher base with spindle galleries and a central turned finial.

A practical and attractive occasional table, with a relatively light form and castors allowing it to be moved easily within the room as needed.

A Victorian octagonal centre table is an occasional piece of furniture featuring an eight-sided top, prominent in late 19th-century English interiors. Designed to sit centrally in a drawing room or hall, these tables often feature turned legs, decorative stretchers, and fine timber veneers.

Victorian centre tables were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, rosewood, or walnut. Construction methods relied on traditional joinery techniques, featuring turned spindles, hand-carved details, cross stretchers for stability, and brass castors on the feet.

Authentic late Victorian pieces display hand-cut mortise and tenon joinery, original brass castors, and natural age-related patina on the timber. Look for turned reeded legs, solid mahogany under-framing, and historical wear patterns consistent with late 19th-century manufacturing.

An octagonal centre table functions well in an entryway foyer, beside an armchair as a lamp stand, or positioned in a bay window. Its geometric profile balances contemporary upholstery, providing warmth through natural wood tones and an architectural silhouette.

Maintain the timber by dusting regularly with a dry microfibre cloth and applying high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year in the direction of the grain. Keep the table away from direct sunlight, central heating radiators, and moisture to prevent veneer damage or wood shrinkage.
