Octagonal Leather Top Centre Table

1900 - 1920
Description

An unusual and beautifully made early twentieth century octagonal centre table with a tooled green leather surface and four turned legs and a matching central pilaster. The legs and central pilaster are united by a scrolled x-frame stretcher. This would look lovely standing in the centre of a hallway, or as a side table in a living room or study.

Please note that this table is slightly too big to fit through a standard width doorway with the top attached - we have had to take the top off to get in through our door. Please check the dimensions below before ordering and check if it will go into your property with the top attached. If not please let us know and we will ship with the top loose, and you will just have to screw it back on once its inside.

Condition: There are a few small scuffs and scratches to the leather top, and small signs of wear in accordance with age on the timber. Overall in very good condition.

Mainland UK delivery (excluding the Scottish highlands) is included in the price - if you would like a quote for delivery elsewhere, or if you would like to collect the item yourself, please get in touch.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A centre table is a freestanding piece of furniture designed to be viewed from all sides and placed in the middle of a room or entrance hall. Popular during the 18th and 19th centuries, these tables served as anchor pieces for social gatherings and displaying books or decorative accents.

Victorian centre tables were predominantly constructed from dense hardwoods such as mahogany, walnut, or oak. Surfaces frequently featured inset tooled leather or decorative veneers, supported by hand-turned balusters and carved wood bases.

Authentic period tables display signs of age such as natural oxidation on timber undersides, slight wood shrinkage along seams, and hand-cut joinery. Original leather insets often show subtle wear, tooling details, and age-appropriate surface patination.

In contemporary homes, a centre table acts as a statement piece in an entryway or hallway topped with a sculptural vessel. It can also function in an open-plan living room or library space to anchor seating arrangements.

Keep the table away from direct heat sources and prolonged sunlight to prevent timber warping and leather drying. Dust regularly with a soft cloth, apply natural beeswax to the woodwork, and use a dedicated leather conditioner to maintain the inset surface.
