Fine Victorian Small Silver Double Compartment Snuff Box & Vesta 1860 Combination

19th century
For Sale by The Fancy Fox
Description

An unusual and very stylish small Victorian silver combination tobacco or snuff box with vesta compartment, both covers with a shared central hinge. The vesta cover is set with a match striker plate. Both sides and all edges with machine engraved decoration reserving a hand engraved cartouche to the main cover. It appears to be in the form of a stylised belt or sash with small symbolic elements. The small size and elegant design would suggest it may have belonged to a lady. Hallmarked to the inside of both base and larger cover, Birmingham 1860, maker initials J.S. A very fine quality and delightful piece.

Provenance: From the private collection of Ismay Diana Fitzroy (1933-2022), daughter of Lord John Percy Fitzroy (1899-1945).

It measures 5.1cm (2") long, 2.5cm (1") wide and 0.8cm (5/16") deep and weighs 22g.

In excellent condition with no damage or repair. The hinge is excellent and both covers close crisply. Very minor handling wear, the engraved decoration is lovely and crisp, as are the hallmarks. A very tiny scuff to the corner edge of the vesta cover is the only fault, otherwise it is immaculate.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian combination box is a dual-compartment silver pocket container designed to hold ground tobacco snuff in one section and friction matches, known as vestas, in the other. Popular during the mid-to-late nineteenth century, these objects provided portable convenience for personal daily use.

These boxes were primarily crafted from sterling silver and decorated using engine turning, a mechanical process that creates precise, geometric wave patterns. Lids often feature soldered hinges and hand-engraved cartouches intended for personal monograms or initials.

Authentic British silver items feature official assay hallmarks stamped onto the silver body or interior rim. Look for the lion passant indicating sterling silver purity, a makers mark, a town mark, a date letter corresponding to the year of manufacture, and a sovereign duty mark for pieces produced before 1890.

Small antique silver boxes can be placed on an office desk, styled inside a curio cabinet, or displayed on a marble valet tray in a dressing room. Their compact size and polished surface provide subtle reflective metallic accents within tailored vignettes.

Clean sterling silver using a specialized non-abrasive silver cloth to remove light tarnish while preserving the natural patina in carved grooves. Avoid harsh chemical dips or abrasive creams that can strip detail or damage engine-turned patterns, and store in low-humidity environments.
