19th century
For Sale by LTANTIQUES.CO.UK
Description

A distinguished Regency armchair by the esteemed makers W. Williamson & Sons of Guildford, dating to the early 19th century.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian oak desk armchair is a structured seating piece manufactured during the reign of Queen Victoria, designed for study or library environments. These chairs typically feature solid oak frames, leather upholstery, turned legs, and brass castors for ease of movement.

Traditional construction involved solid hardwoods such as oak or mahogany, paired with genuine hide leather upholstery. Metal studs or nailheads were applied to secure the leather, while brass castors were fitted to the base of turned timber legs.

Authentic pieces feature mortise and tenon joinery, genuine hand-turned leg profiles, and period-accurate brass castors. Stamps or brass plaques from historic makers, such as W. Williamson & Sons, are frequently found on the underside of the frame or back legs.

Position the armchair alongside a minimalist timber desk or within a designated reading corner to create texture and historic contrast. Combining traditional dark leather seating with neutral wall tones balances the visual weight of the oak frame.

Clean the oak frame using a soft cloth and apply beeswax periodically along the wood grain to protect the finish. Treat the leather with a dedicated hide conditioner to prevent drying or cracking, keeping the piece away from direct heat sources.
