Painted Pine Kitchen Dresser C.1890

19th century
Description

Late 19th.c. painted pine kitchen dresser or sideboard retaining the original 'scumbled' paintwork c.1890. Raised back with a shallow shelf with serpentine shaped edge and four small drawers. Over the superb 2" thick worktop (height 34") in solid sycamore. Base with seven large drawers of graduated height arranged around the slightly recessed central cupboard fitted with a single shelf inside. Beautiful scumbled paintwork designed to give the impression of more expensive burr walnut and oak veneers. It is quite rare to find these sideboards with their original paint as the vast majority have been stripped back to the bare pine. With half depth turned finial mouldings applied either side of the drawers and a cupid's bow shaped apron above the cupboard. Raised on the original tall turned feet front and rear. Some wear to the paintwork, otherwise excellent colour and condition, cleaned and waxed in our workshops.

Note the top is removable for delivery.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian kitchen dresser is a utilitarian storage piece featuring a combination of drawers, cupboards, and often a galleried top or upper shelf, popularised in 19th-century British homes.

These pieces were commonly crafted from native softwoods such as pine, often finished with scumbling, stain, or paint to simulate more expensive figure woods.

Authentic examples feature hand-cut dovetail joints, turned wooden handles, natural age-related timber shrinkage, and original backboards fastened with early machine or hand-forged nails.

A painted pine dresser functions effectively in a contemporary dining room, hallway, or kitchen, serving as a focal storage piece topped with ceramics, table linens, or framed artwork.

Clean the surface gently using a soft, dry microfibre cloth, avoid harsh liquid solvents, and apply a light coating of clear beeswax paste periodically to safeguard the timber finish.
