Antique Baume & Co Half Hunter Pocket Watch

1920 - 1940
Description

Antique Baume & Co half hunter pocket watch.

The watch has a Swiss 15-jewel stem-winding movement which is working nicely. The movement is signed with the B&Co logo with three small stars, a mark which was formally registered in 1878 although there is evidence it was often used prior to this date. Baume & Co were importers of watches, including Longines watches, into the UK and the Commonwealth. The movement is protected by an inner hinged cover.

The watch measures 50mm diameter excluding the winding stem and the loop. The case is the gold filled Empress model from the American Watch Case Company. It is in beautiful condition.

The winding crown pushes in to open the front cover. Inside, there is a glass lens which is in lovely condition (some natural light reflection showing in the main photo).

The dial is in beautiful condition with blued steel hands, including the special half hunter hour hand so that the time can be read when the front cover is closed.

The watch comes in a vintage presentation box.

Declaration

All of our watches are checked over before listing, and are also checked for accuracy which is usually within around +/- two to three minutes over 24 hours (unless otherwise stated), which is considered respectable for a vintage watch.

We are a VAT registered company and all purchases are covered by Consumer Regulations.

Credit / debit card purchases up to £300 can be made over the telephone on 01386 750238 or you can proceed via the 'Purchase Antique' button on each listing page. Alternatively, there is a Paypal payment link if you scroll down the page and we also accept bank transfers.

We are an on-line only business and do not have facilities for callers. Our offices are open from Monday to Friday 9am to 5pm.

With regards to appraisals / valuations, we receive a huge number of information requests each day and unfortunately do not have the manpower to deal with them all individually. Our advice would be to contact a local auctioneer for a full appraisal.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A half hunter pocket watch, also known as a demi-hunter, features a protective metal cover with a glass window in the centre. This design enables the user to read the time using the outer hour markers without opening the case.

Antique pocket watches were traditionally crafted using solid gold, silver, or gold-filled cases, with white enamelled dials, blued steel hands, and internal mechanical movements containing jewelled bearings.

Authenticity can be verified by inspecting the hallmarks inside the watch case for metal purity, examining makers signatures on the dial or movement, and assessing the construction quality of the mechanical escapement.

A pocket watch can be displayed under a glass cloche on a pocket watch stand, arranged on an office desk tray, or showcased within a framed shadow box in a study or dressing room.

Store the timepiece in a dry, temperature-regulated environment away from magnetic fields. Wind the mechanical movement carefully without over-tightening, and schedule professional servicing by a qualified horologist every three to five years.
