Very Rare Solid Silver Vesta Case Matchstriker Antique 1883 Victorian Novelty

19th century
Description

A very rare Victorian novelty solid silver novelty vesta case / match striker. It is hallmarked for London 1883 with the makers marks being WT for William Thornhill of New Bond St London. It is in ok condition considering its scarcity having no splits or holes, however the feet have been slightly pushed in and the tail is missing but this would be easy to replace particularly as there are two holes to secure two pins. It also needs a clean but I have not attempted this. It measures approx. 3 inches (7.6cm) long by 2 inches (5.5cm) wide by 1.5 (3.8cm) inches tall and weighs 63 grams. A rare a fascinating piece.

Declaration

The Silver Squirrel has dated this Victorian Silver Vesta Case to the Victorian era.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A vesta case, also known as a match safe, is a small portable container designed to keep friction matches dry during the late nineteenth century. Novelty versions were cast in imaginative shapes, such as animals or figures, and featured an integrated ribbed striking surface.

Victorian vesta cases were typically made from sterling silver, brass, or nickel plate, frequently combining metalwork with organic materials like tortoiseshell, mother-of-pearl, or bone. Metal surfaces featured engine-turning, relief casting, or engraved detailing alongside a rough striker panel.

Authentic British silver vesta cases carry full hallmarks from an assay office, including the lion passant, town mark, makers initials, and a specific date letter. Authentic period pieces also display functional spring hinges, precise fitment, and a worn corrugated strike surface.

An antique silver vesta case functions well as a decorative accent placed on an office desk, curated within a glass cabinet of curiosities, or arranged on a tray atop a mantelpiece alongside leather-bound books.

Silver components should be maintained using a dry silver polishing cloth to remove tarnish, avoiding liquid dips that can harm organic elements. Tortoiseshell requires protection from direct sunlight, extreme humidity, and high temperatures to prevent cracking or warping.
