19th century
Description

Antique Victorian Oil Painting – River Conwy, North Wales – Thomas Spinks (1847–1927), c.1890

Artist: Thomas Spinks (1847–1927)

Title: A Quiet Pool, North Wales – On the Conwy River

Date: Circa 1890 (Late 19th Century Victorian)

Medium: Oil on canvas

Signed: “T. Spinks” lower corner

Frame: Original gilt frame, ready to hang

Size (frame): H 46.5 cm x W 62 cm x D 5.5 cm

Description

A fine antique Victorian oil on canvas depicting a tranquil pool on the River Conwy, North Wales, painted during Thomas Spinks’ sought-after Welsh period. The composition is well balanced, with rugged boulders on the left bank and softer ground to the right, where mature trees and a small clearing create depth. Two grazing sheep add scale and a pleasing pastoral detail.

A warm golden-brown tree in the foreground anchors the scene against cooler greens and greys, while the river is painted with convincing movement and light. In the distance, hills and mountains recede gently beneath an animated sky of white cloud and blue, with a gathering storm cloud adding atmosphere and drama typical of North Welsh weather.

About the Artist

Thomas Spinks was a recognised British landscape painter active in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Recorded in London in 1880, he exhibited regularly between 1880 and 1907, including at the Royal Academy and notable venues such as the Walker Art Gallery (Liverpool) and Manchester Art Gallery. He moved to Bettws-y-Coed in 1889, and his Welsh river and mountain landscapes from this period are regarded as among his strongest and most collectible works.

Provenance and Labels

The reverse bears a Prestwich Fine Art label with handwritten details. Provenance is recorded as private collection from the vendor, Mitchells (Lake District auction house), and subsequently curated by Cheshire Antiques Consultant LTD. The original canvas retains a faint but legible maker’s stamp: “WINSOR & NEWTON / LONDON”, consistent with late 19th-century professional artists’ materials.

Condition Report

Offered in fine used condition. The painted surface is in good overall order. A repair has been carried out to the reverse of the canvas with corresponding touch-up to the paint surface in the repaired area. There is age-related craquelure and some foxing consistent with age. The gilt frame shows general wear including old repairs, chips, losses and surface scratches, commensurate with age and use.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian landscape paintings typically feature naturalistic depictions of rural terrain, rivers, and mountains, reflecting a period appreciation for natural topographies and romanticised British scenery.

Artists used oil-based pigments applied to natural linen or cotton canvas stretched over wooden frames, often presented in hand-carved or moulded giltwood and gesso frames.

Authentic period paintings show subtle age-related craquelure on the paint surface, natural oxidisation on the canvas reverse, period-correct framing hardware, and painterly signatures consistent with the era.

Displaying traditional oil art above a fireplace mantel or console table creates an engaging visual anchor, combining historical artwork with contemporary minimalist furniture for a balanced look.

Keep canvas paintings away from direct sunlight, excess moisture, and extreme temperature fluctuations, dusting the frame lightly with a soft, dry brush when necessary.
