Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Victorian Arts and Crafts pedestal desk is a late 19th-century writing table comprising a flat writing surface resting upon two supporting pedestals. Originating as a movement against industrial mass production, Arts and Crafts furniture prioritises honest joinery, solid timber, and subtle geometric or botanical hand-carved decoration.

Desks from this era were primarily constructed using dense hardwoods such as mahogany, oak, or walnut. Internal secondary timbers like pine or ash were used for drawer linings, complemented by cast brass hardware, escutcheons, and decorative inlay.

Authentic period desks feature hand-cut dovetail jointing inside drawers, genuine natural wear around handles, and hand-planed timber surfaces. Look for age-appropriate oxidisation on original brass fittings and shrinkage lines along solid timber panel joins.

Position the desk centrally in a home office or against a plain wall to highlight the timber grain and carved pedestal panels. Balance the dark mahogany tones by pairing the desk with modern minimalist lighting, contemporary neutral paint shades, and clean-lined seating.

Keep the timber away from direct sunlight and artificial heat sources to avoid warping, cracking, or fading. Regularly dust the surface with a dry microfiber cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish annually to maintain the protective finish.
