French Gilt Wood Wall Mirror Louis Xvi Style, Directoire Period

19th century
For Sale by Pyrontique
Description

French Gilt Wood Wall Mirror Louis XVI Style, Directoire Period (Late 18th - Early 19th Century)

A fine example of French Neoclassical decorative art, this gilt wood wall mirror dates from the Directoire to early 19th-century Louis XVI revival period.

The well-carved warm gilt wood frame features elegant proportions and a decorative crest with classical motifs of flowers and a musical instrument.

Principally designed as a wall-mounted mirror, these pieces were often given as wedding gifts.

Overall it is in good condition with a deep aged hue to the patina. The mirror plate is a later replacement and there are some historic gilding repairs.

Ideal for placing above a console or fireplace, or positioned in an entrance hall or living area.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Originating in late eighteenth-century France, Louis XVI and Directoire mirrors are defined by neoclassical principles, featuring straight geometric frames, symmetrical floral crestings, beaded borders, and carved classical motifs.

These mirrors were constructed using hand-carved timber, coated with layers of gesso paste, and finished using water gilding with gold leaf applied over a clay bole base.

Authentic period pieces feature hand-carved joinery on the reverse, subtle wear to the gold leaf revealing red or yellow clay bole beneath, and original mercury-backed glass showing natural oxidisation.

Positioning a gilded mirror above a clean-lined console table or mantelpiece creates a balanced focal point that bridges contemporary decor with historic architectural detail.

Dust gently with a dry, soft-bristled brush or microfibre cloth, avoiding water or chemical cleaning agents which can dissolve gesso and ruin fragile gold leaf.
