A lovely antique Hamadan rug, woven circa 1920. This rug features a geometrical all over design on a pink red field and deeper red border. Some great secondary colours including greens, golds and blues. A little wear (see below) which adds to its charm and is reflected in the price.

Size: 1.53m x 1.03m (5ft x 3ft 5in)

This rug has medium, age related wear, slightly heavier on the bottom border (see photos). Fringes and selvedges are slightly fraying, small bite to corner (see photos) - all of this has been reflected in the price. It has been professionally cleaned.

Hamadan rugs originate from the ancient city of Hamadan and hundreds of surrounding villages in western Iran. As one of the oldest weaving centers in the region, the area produces a wide variety of tribal and village carpets known for their geometric patterns and durable construction.

Hamadan carpets are traditionally hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile on a cotton or wool warp and weft foundation. They are crafted using a distinctive single-weft technique, where a single shot of weft passes between each row of hand-tied symmetric knots.

Authentic pieces can be identified by examining the reverse side, which displays a distinct single-weft construction and visible hand-tied knots. They often feature angular geometric motifs, repeating diamond or medallion field patterns, and natural dye colour variations known as abrash.
