Chippendale Revival Mahogany Display Cabinet

1900 - 1920
Description

A refined Chippendale Revival mahogany display cabinet of impressive scale and quality, featuring rich figured veneers, confident carving, and a gently serpentine front. Constructed in solid mahogany with well-chosen flame mahogany veneers, the cabinet reflects the enduring influence of 18th-century English Chippendale design, interpreted in a later revival context.

The cabinet is topped by a bold moulded cornice incorporating a continuous carved frieze of rosettes and scrolling foliage, centred by a carved floral cartouche. The façade is arranged with a central pair of astragal-glazed doors, the glazing bars formed as elongated ovals and intersecting arches—an elegant and recognisably Chippendale motif. To either side are paneled cupboard doors, each veneered in striking book-matched flame mahogany and framed by finely carved mouldings.

The central glazed section opens to reveal fixed glass shelves set against a light interior back, creating a clean and effective display area for porcelain, glassware, or decorative objects. The flanking cupboards open to reveal fixed shaped wooden shelves, providing substantial concealed storage. The cabinet stands on shaped bracket feet, united by a moulded base rail, lending visual weight and architectural balance to the piece.

Finished in a deep, warm polish, the cabinet shows excellent colour, grain definition, and patina, with crisp carving and well-preserved surfaces throughout.

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Chippendale Revival furniture refers to pieces produced predominantly in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries that reinterpreted the eighteenth-century designs of Thomas Chippendale, incorporating intricate carved details, astragal glazing, and fine wood veneers.

Cabinets of this style feature dense mahogany timber, flame mahogany veneers, glass shelves, hand-fitted joinery such as dovetail joints, and decorative astragal glazing bars across the door panels.

Authentic revival pieces typically exhibit precise joinery paired with hand-finished carving, heavy timber construction, original brass lock mechanisms, and characteristic flame mahogany grain patterns.

Position the cabinet as a focal piece in a dining room, hallway, or living space, using its glass enclosure to display curated contemporary ceramics, glassware, or books to create visual contrast against the dark timber.

Preserve the wood finish by dusting regularly with a soft microfiber cloth and applying a high-quality beeswax polish annually, keeping the cabinet away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer damage.
