A swept frame features concave or outwardly curving side rails, popularised during the 19th-century Rococo Revival period. These pieces feature decorative plaster mouldings finished in gold leaf to frame oil paintings and drawings.

Craftsmen built a softwood base structure, applied multiple coats of plaster-like gesso, and pressed or carved ornate designs into the surface before applying gold leaf over a clay bole base.

Authentic period frames display fine surface cracking called craquelure, subtle red or dark clay bole showing through worn high points, and natural patination rather than uniform modern paint finishes.
