1900 - 1920
For Sale by Puckerings
Description

A wonderful Edwardian English sterling silver tea caddy with a hinged lid and ring handles to each side. The body is beautifully decorated with garlands and a simple floral motif.

The lid fits well and the hinge in full working order; once opened, a lavishly gilded interior is revealed.

The caddy is marked on the back for Birmingham 1902 (the makers mark is somewhat rubbed); this caddy is lucky enough to have an English design registration number on the underside (390774) for 1902. Registration numbers were reserved for items of notable value, the system was not mandatory for all products, it was costly, and it was designed to protect only the most innovative or valuable designs.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

An Edwardian sterling silver tea caddy is a table container crafted in Great Britain between 1901 and 1910 designed specifically to hold loose tea leaves. These items often incorporate neoclassical motifs, gadrooning, and decorative relief work.

Silver tea caddies from this era were primarily raised or cast from solid sterling silver, adhering to the standard minimum purity of 925 parts per thousand. Decoration was executed through repousse, chasing, fluting, and soldering cast elements such as handles and finials.

Authentic pieces feature full British hallmark sets struck into the metal, including the walking lion passant for sterling silver, an assay office symbol (such as a leopard head for London or an anchor for Birmingham), a date letter, and a maker mark.

An antique silver caddy can be styled on a sideboard, desk, or open shelving as a sophisticated metallic accent. It can function as a decorative piece or serve a practical role holding small trinkets.

Clean sterling silver gently using a non-abrasive silver polish and a soft cotton cloth to remove tarnish. Avoid submerging hollow pieces in water, and store the item in a dry, low-humidity environment wrapped in anti-tarnish cloth.
