Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Tea caddies were essential household items during the 18th and 19th centuries, designed to secure and preserve loose tea leaves. In the Victorian era, silversmiths created intricate silver vessels featuring ornate repousse work and relief carving, reflecting popular architectural and natural decorative styles.

Victorian tea caddies were primarily fashioned from sterling silver, meeting British hallmarking standards of 925 parts per thousand pure silver. Silversmiths used hand-chasing, repousse hammering, fluting, and casting to create detailed surface decoration, domed lids, and ornate feet.

Authentic English silver caddies feature a set of official hallmarks stamped into the metal, typically including the makers mark, town mark (such as the leopards head for London), silver purity mark (lion passant), and date letter.

An antique silver tea caddy can be displayed on a dining room sideboard, entry console, or open shelving. Polished metalwork creates visual contrast when positioned against dark timber, marble tops, or modern minimalist decor.

Silver caddies should be polished gently with a specialized silver cloth or soft cotton pad using non-abrasive silver cream. Dust regularly and store away from high humidity or direct sulfur sources to slow down natural oxidisation.
