Description

A scarce sterling silver chamberstick with conical snuffer, the chamberstick being fully hallmarked for the celebrated silversmith Matthew Boulton, Birmingham, 1825. The snuffer (of the same date but maker stamp of 'WC', likely William Chawner II) fits perfectly into the holder and to the top of the the chamberstick.

Matthew Boulton (1728–1809) was a pioneering Birmingham silversmith who elevated the city's metalworking reputation through his craft. He was a premier maker of neoclassical silver and was instrumental in founding the Birmingham Assay Office in 1773.

This delightful Boulton example is surprisingly heavy given its size. It boasts a thick sterling silver leaf handle falling to a shell dish upon three feet, upon which sits a gadroon rimmed candle holder with ejector.

The whole is in a very good condition indeed throughout.
