Generous Welsh Arm Chair

18th century
Description

A large scale and characterful Welsh arm chair in oak, the twin panel back either side of a centre rail inlaid with four fruitwood hearts, this was clearly a marriage gift or love token. There are two sets of initials to the back of the deep top rail and the uprights are all chamfered, the original thick two piece seat is present and all rails are also original. The surface patina is superb. This is an extremely robust chair and the heart inlays have a naive quality which is extremely endearing. A wonderful chair of great presence.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A panelled oak armchair, historically referred to as a wainscot chair, is a joined timber chair featuring a solid framed back panel, sturdy armrests, and mortise and tenon construction, popular in Britain from the 16th to 18th centuries.

These pieces were crafted primarily from local English or Welsh oak using mortise and tenon joints secured with wooden pegs (trunnels), resulting in heavy, durable framework built without modern adhesives.

Authentic period chairs show signs of hand-planed timber, irregular peg placement, uneven wear around the stretcher rails where feet rested, and deep, natural patination within the grain.

A heavy oak armchair works well as a statement accent piece in an entryway, library, or bedroom, often softened with textured modern cushions or sheepskin throws to balance the structured wood.

Dust regularly with a soft cloth and apply a high-grade beeswax polish once or twice a year, keeping the wood away from direct heat sources and extreme moisture fluctuations to prevent splitting.
