20thc Cheval Mirror

1900 - 1920
Description

An early 20th-century cheval mirror, featuring an arched mirror plate set within a shaped wooden frame, raised on a swivelling stand with turned side supports and cabriole-style feet united by a shaped stretcher.

This elegant free-standing mirror is typical of the period, combining practicality with refined decorative detail. The gently arched top and shaped frame create a pleasing vertical emphasis, while the swivelling mechanism allows the mirror to be adjusted for ease of use. The turned uprights and cabriole supports reflect the continued influence of traditional craftsmanship in early 20th-century furniture design, lending the piece a graceful and balanced appearance.

Well-proportioned and visually light, the mirror would make a versatile addition to a bedroom, dressing room, or hallway, providing both function and period character. Its free-standing form allows it to be positioned flexibly within an interior, while the warm tone of the timber frame complements a wide range of decorative schemes, from classic to more eclectic settings.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A cheval mirror is a full-length floor mirror suspended within a dual-upright frame, named after the French word for horse due to its four-legged support structure. Originating in the late 18th century, these tilting mirrors became a staple feature of dressing rooms throughout the 19th and 20th centuries.

Traditional cheval mirrors feature solid timber frames such as oak, mahogany, walnut, or pine, housing a silvered glass mirror plate. The construction includes swivel pins or brass tension screws on the side uprights to allow the mirror glass to tilt to various angles.

Authentic 20th-century pieces usually exhibit hand-carved details or shaped top profiles, wooden backboards held with small brass or iron sprigs, and period-appropriate metal swivel hardware. Signs of age may include mild desilverine or foxing around the edges of the mirror glass and natural patina on the wood finish.

Place the mirror in a bedroom, dressing area, or spacious hallway to maximise light reflection and create an illusion of depth. The warm timber tones contrast effectively against crisp neutral walls, offering functional elegance alongside traditional architectural character.

Dust the timber frame regularly with a soft, dry microfibre cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish occasionally to nourish the wood finish. Clean the mirror glass using a glass cleaner applied to a cloth rather than sprayed directly onto the surface to prevent moisture from seeping behind the frame.
