Description

A delightful Worcester porcelain coffee cup in a rich "wet" blue ground with two oval reserves painted with exotic fancy birds in garden landscapes. Gilt arabesques and beading frame the reserve edges and a feathery gilt foliate arrangement sits between them. The grooved strap handle has delicate gilt buds and graduated droplets running down the back. Crescent mark to the base. c.1770.

It measures 6.2cm (2 7/16") high and measures 5.5cm (2 3/16") rim to rim.

In excellent condition with no damage, repair or restoration and very minor handling wear; just a little rubbing to the gilt on the rim.

First Period Worcester porcelain refers to items manufactured at the Worcester factory between its founding in 1751 and 1783, a timeframe often called the Dr Wall period. Ceramics from this era are recognized for their soft-paste soapstone formulation, ground colours like wet blue, and hand-painted enamel decoration.

Eighteenth-century Worcester pieces were produced using a soft-paste porcelain mixture containing crushed soapstone from Cornwall, providing superior resistance to thermal shock. Decoration involved underglaze cobalt grounds, hand-applied enamel paints, and honey gilding.
