Fine Pontypool Toleware Handpainted Tray C1840

Description

This beautiful PONTYPOOL TOLEWARE HANDPAINTED TRAY, with pierced gallery and gilt border, dates from circa 1840.

It is decorated with Fruit, Flowers and Foliage in colours that remain bright and clear. The open-work basket, containing Strawberries, is a delight.

There are the remains of an old paper depository label on the back from the Army and Navy Stores and the owner’s name LADY ?OSKINS (presumably HOSKINS)..

The TRAY is in good condition with only minor wear to the paint. The pierced gallery is misshapen in places.

Toleware refers to lacquered or japanned metalware produced primarily from sheet iron or tinplate. The production technique originated in Pontypool, Wales, during the late 17th century and evolved into a major decorative art movement through the 18th and 19th centuries, characterised by dark grounds and handpainted motifs.

Antique toleware trays were constructed using hand-hammered iron or thin tinplate sheets. These were coated in multiple layers of asphaltum-based varnish or dark lacquer, then detailed with oil paints, gilding, and clear protective coats.

Authentic 19th-century pieces feature hand-painted botanical or still-life subjects, fine surface craquelure, authentic rubbing along high points, and hand-punched or reticulated galleries rather than modern stamped patterns.

A painted toleware tray can be displayed upright on a custom stand, mounted securely on a wall using a plate hanger, or placed centrally on a sideboard or coffee table to ground smaller decorative objects.

Dust gently with a clean, dry microfibre cloth. Avoid water, harsh chemical detergents, and abrasive polishes, as moisture and solvents can strip delicate paint layers and cause the underlying metal to oxidise.
