Small 18th Century Georgian Walnut Chest of Drawers

18th century
Description

An Exceptionally Attractive Early 18th Century George I Period Highly Figured Walnut Chest, Of Extremely Rare Diminutive Small Proportions, Having Quarter Veneered Top, Pull Out Leather Inset Brushing Slide And Four Long Drawers, With Replacement Old Brasswear And Featherbanded Decoration, Raised On Original Shaped Bracket Feet.

Constructed in the relatively typical fashion for an early Georgian chest of drawers it features very rare and not often found small proportions, which in combination with the rich colour and surface and highly figured walnut veneers, combine to create a beautiful and well made piece of early 18th century english furniture.

The chest ahas replacement brass handles which are old, and almost certainly of the exact type which would have been in place when it was first made. It also retains its original bracket feet, not something many chests of drawers which are over 300 years old can claim.

As mentioned above the size is also incredibly rare, you just don’t find many antique chest of drawers this size, especially ones that look like this and remain in such fabulous condition.

This wonderful early 18th century georgian english chest of drawers is quite simply a beautiful piece of antique furniture, whilst also of course being incredibly practical and functional for modern day living. In fact it is just as functional today, in the 21st century, as it was the day it was made, in the 18th century.

As with all items which we offer for sale this chest of drawers has been through our workshops, where it has been attended to by our highly skilled, well trained, traditional antique furniture restorers who have inspected it and given it a natural wax polish to ensure it is in top condition and ready to be placed straight into the home before being offered for sale.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Early Georgian chests of drawers from the 18th century typically feature figured walnut veneers, crossbanded drawer fronts, herringbone inlays, and brass drop handles on backplates. Many examples from this period incorporate a pull-out brushing slide and rest on bracket feet.

Craftsmen used solid oak or pine for the secondary carcass wood, covered with decorative walnut veneers such as burr or figured walnut. Hardware was typically cast brass, and drawer linings were constructed using hand-cut dovetail joints.

Authentic period pieces show evidence of hand-planed surfaces, irregular hand-cut dovetails, and oak or pine drawer linings with grain running front-to-back. Look for natural oxidisation inside timber drawers and historical cast brass fixings.

A Georgian walnut chest provides warm wood tones that contrast well against contemporary neutral walls. It functions as storage in a hallway, bedroom, or living area, serving as a focal anchor when paired with modern art or simple ceramics.

Dust regularly with a dry, soft cotton cloth and apply a natural beeswax polish twice a year to preserve the timber patina. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and direct sunlight to prevent veneer shrinkage or fading.
