Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Louis XV fauteuil is a French open-armed chair characterised by S-curved cabriole legs, a moulded wooden frame, and padded armrests known as manchettes. Originating in the 18th century during the Rococo period, these chairs prioritised comfort and balanced proportions.

Traditional Louis XV fauteuils were crafted from solid hardwoods such as walnut, beech, or oak, often featuring hand-carved floral or shell motifs. The frames used mortise and tenon joinery, upholstered with woven silk damask, brocade, or tapestry fixed with brass upholstery tacks.

Authentic period pieces typically show signs of hand-planed timber on the underside, hand-forged iron fasteners or wooden peg joinery, and asymmetrical hand-carved detailing. Stamps from French master cabinetmakers may also be present on the underside of the seat rail.

A carved walnut fauteuil functions as an accent chair in living spaces, bedrooms, or study areas. Pairing its classical curves alongside clean-lined modern furniture creates visual contrast.

Timber frames should be dusted regularly with a soft cloth and conditioned periodically with natural beeswax polish. Textiles require gentle vacuuming using a soft brush attachment and prompt spot-cleaning with suitable upholstery cleaners.
