Art Deco Silver Paste Lizard Brooch

1900 - 1920
For Sale by Corvidae Antique
Description

This is a lovely example of an antique paste-set silver lizard brooch. Beautifully made and realistically modelled with a great sense of movement. Set with twinkling white pastes and we believe dating from the 1920s. A genuine Deco original which looks fantastic on a dark jacket or dress!

The French jeweller Georges Frédéric Strass invented “Paste" in 1724. True paste is crafted from a special leaded glass that was painstakingly cut and then polished by hand with metal powder until it appeared to shimmer like a diamond. It was an instant success with the chic upper classes of Parisian society and continues to be highly sought after today. Nowadays paste is often used as a generic term to describe costume gemstones.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

During the Art Deco period of the 1920s and 1930s, jewellers drew inspiration from nature, creating stylized animal, insect, and reptile motifs. Lizards and salamanders were favored symbols often rendered in silver or platinum and set with diamonds or paste stones.

Paste jewellery from the Art Deco era typically features hand-cut leaded glass stones designed to imitate the brilliance of diamonds. These stones were set into silver or silver-plated base metals, often with open-backed or foil-backed collets and fitted with traditional pin mechanisms and safety chains.

Authentic pieces from this period exhibit hand-set paste stones, characteristic pin fastenings such as trombone or rollover clasps, and safety chains. Look for natural patination or oxidisation on the silver metal framework and precise geometric or curvilinear stone settings.

Brooches can be styled by pinning them to coat lapels, silk scarves, velvet jackets, or high-collared shirts. They can also be attached to evening bags or worn in hair arrangements for a decorative accent.

Clean paste jewellery gently using a dry, soft polishing cloth to remove surface tarnish from the silver. Avoid submerging paste items in liquid cleaners or water, as moisture can damage the foil backing beneath the glass stones.
