Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Nineteenth-century overmantel mirrors were designed specifically to sit above a fireplace hearth, featuring a wide flat base, low profile feet, and an arched or rectangular frame often finished in gilt wood and gesso.

These mirrors were typically constructed from carved timber framing coated in gessoa mixture of chalk and glueand finished with water gilding using fine gold leaf to achieve a reflective metallic sheen.

Authentic period pieces display subtle signs of age such as fine cracking or crazing in the gesso layer, minor oxidisation or foxing on the glass plate, and hand-carved timber joinery on the reverse.

Positioning a large gilt mirror above a fireplace or console table creates a structural focal point, enhancing light distribution and adding historical contrast within contemporary decorative schemes.

Frame surfaces should be dusted gently using a dry soft brush or feather duster, avoiding liquid cleaners or water which can dissolve the delicate water-gilded finish and gesso substrate.
