Antique Continental Oak Blanket Chest

19th century
Description

A large antique oak chest, dating from the late 18th century. It is most likely continental and has a hinged lid opening on its original strap hinges. It is a good quality piece with raised geometric panels on the front, panelled sides and a planked top with moulded edge. It stands on bracket feet with a carved frieze.

A great size for a coffee table, end of bed storage or even a TV stand.

It is in good condition for its age and displays well. The oak has a lovely rich colour and the interior is generally clean and tidy. There are some signs of use and age, some general knocks and surface marks, minor shrinkage splits and a couple of old repairs but nothing detrimental and no major damages. There are some minor signs of old woodworm which has all been treated as a precaution. The box has been cleaned and gently polished and is ready for use.

We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Continental oak blanket chests, often referred to as coffers, were primary storage vessels in European households throughout the seventeenth to nineteenth centuries. These sturdy wooden trunks were constructed to store household linens, bedding, and textiles securely.

Traditional blanket chests were crafted from solid oak hardwoods using peg construction and mortise and tenon joinery. The fronts typically incorporated fielded or geometric panels set into heavy timber stiles, paired with hand-carved decorative bases.

Authentic period pieces exhibit signs of historic hand-tooling, such as irregular saw marks, hand-carved decorative aprons, and original iron or brass keyhole escutcheons. Look for natural wood shrinkage across solid timber panels and oxidisation around metal fittings.

A solid oak blanket chest functions effectively as a focal coffee table in a living space, an entryway bench, or storage placed at the foot of a bed. Its rich wood tones contrast visually against contemporary neutral walls and modern upholstered furniture.

Dust the timber regularly with a soft, dry lint-free cloth and apply a high-quality beeswax paste periodically to nourish the oak. Keep the chest away from direct heat sources and damp environments to prevent wood movement and cracking.
