19th Century Mahogany Wellington Base Open Library Bookcase, C1810

19th century
Description

Superb Quality Early 19th-Century Regency Period Mahogany Wellington-Base Open Library Bookcase

An early 19th-century Regency period solid mahogany tall open library bookcase with a double “Wellington” design base and an open top with fully adjustable shelves. England, circa 1810. A moulded cornice sits above the upper section, which offers three fully adjustable shelves, over a double “Wellington” base with ten graduated, mahogany-lined drawers featuring finely detailed lobed knob handles. The base is flanked on either side by corbels and locking pilasters, fitted with high-quality multi-lever working locks by Chubb & Son, makers to HRH Prince Albert.

The bookcase is constructed in separate elements – including the moulded cornice, upper section, lower section and plinth – allowing it to be dismantled for easier access through properties where space or entryways may be restricted.

The solid mahogany has developed a rich, warm patina, further enhancing its visual appeal and attesting to its superb original condition and careful stewardship over the years. Georgian–Regency bookcases are celebrated for their imposing yet elegant design, often using dense, high-quality mahogany, and this example is no exception. This open library bookcase is in excellent original condition, boasting a deep, lustrous patina that speaks to the quality of its craftsmanship and the care it has received. The figured mahogany is particularly attractive, giving the piece a refined and architectural presence.

Overall, this bookcase is not only a testament to exceptional early 19th-century craftsmanship but also a striking example of classic Georgian–Regency design, making it an ideal focal point for any sophisticated library or refined interior.

A Wellington open library bookcase is a two-part furniture piece featuring an open-shelved upper section mounted above a multi-drawer Wellington chest base. Named after the First Duke of Wellington, the base features a vertical hinged pilaster that locks all drawers simultaneously.

During the Regency period in the early nineteenth century, high-grade mahogany was the primary wood utilised for library furniture, often paired with oak or pine drawer linings, brass knob handles, and hand-carved decorative corbels.

Authentic nineteenth-century Wellington bases feature a hinged side pilaster fitted with a lock that overlaps the drawer edges. Additional details include hand-cut dovetail joints, oak or pine secondary woods inside the drawers, and period-correct brass hardware.

Position the bookcase against a neutral focal wall in a study, living room, or hallway. Curate the upper shelves with bound volumes, decorative ceramics, and framed prints, using the lower drawers to organize office items or paperwork.

Maintain mahogany timber by dusting regularly with a soft dry cloth and applying beeswax every six to twelve months. Keep the piece away from direct heat sources and sunlight to prevent timber shrinkage and finish fading.
