Fine George II Mahogany Tallboy (Chest on Chest), C.1745–1760

18th century
Description

A fine mid-18th-century George II mahogany tallboy of excellent colour and proportion, retaining its original gilt brass handles throughout. The upper section fitted with two short drawers over three long graduated drawers, above a base section of three further long drawers.

The case is flanked by reeded quarter columns with gilt brass capitals and bases, and finished with a well-moulded cornice. The piece is raised on shaped ogee bracket feet, typical of the period.

The mahogany displays a rich, warm patina with attractive grain, particularly to the drawer fronts. Drawer linings are oak, with traditional dovetail construction evident. Overall, a well-preserved and elegant example of Georgian domestic furniture.

Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George II tallboy, or chest on chest, is an 18th-century double-tiered chest of drawers designed to provide vertical storage within a compact footprint.

These pieces were predominantly crafted from solid and veneered mahogany, featuring oak drawer linings, hand-cut dovetail joints, and cast brass handles.

Authentic pieces typically exhibit hand-cut dovetails, period brass escutcheons, solid oak or pine drawer linings with hand-planed backs, and period-correct bracket feet.

A Georgian tallboy functions as a focal point in a bedroom or spacious hallway, pairing well with contemporary artwork and neutral textiles.

Dust regularly with a soft microfibre cloth, apply beeswax once or twice annually along the timber grain, and keep the piece away from direct heat sources.
