Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Victorian coastal paintings typically focus on working maritime life, harbour scenes, and coastal landscapes. Artists of this era emphasised natural light, detailed figural studies, and realistic depictions of sea vessels.

Nineteenth-century paintings were primarily executed using oil paints ground with natural pigments on stretched flax canvas or wooden panels. Frames were generally constructed from softwood with gesso moulding and gold leaf or stained wood finishes.

Authentic pieces display natural age-related craquelure across the paint surface, historic oxidation on the reverse side of the panel or canvas, and artist signatures applied contemporaneously with the paint layer.

Hang the artwork above a sideboard, mantelpiece, or console table to create a focal point. Combine it with neutral upholstery, natural timber, and clean-lined architectural details to balance modern and traditional elements.

Dust the surface gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush, avoiding water or household chemical cleaners. Position the painting away from direct sunlight, dampness, and fluctuating heat sources to prevent cracking or warping.
