Antique Kurdish Kelleh

19th century
Description

A fantastic antique Kurdish Kelleh from Northern Persia in a narrow corridor size with exceptional dyes from the late 19th century.  A wonderful and early all over field design too, consisting of the famous 'Harshang' design, often known as the Crab design too, less obvious in the Harshang format, a more abstract version of a Crab in our opinion.  The Crab design is more-often seen in Caucasian rugs from Azerbaijan and in particular the main border.  Stunning natural colours, the dyes they created in the late 19th century were truly special and have faded, yet retained their depth of colour.

Kurdish rugs are rugs woven by the Kurdish people in Middle East, predominantly the larger Kurdistan region including south Caucasus and north-western Persia. This is primarily where the rug weaving industry was and still is today.

We offer the service of viewing any of our carpets & rugs in-situ in London, Surrey, Hampshire & the UK by appointment. Request a home visit to choose a suitable day and time for us to visit you.

Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A Kelleh is a specific long and medium-width rug format produced in Persia and Kurdistan, traditionally woven to form the head carpet in a formal room layout.

Kurdish rugs are typically hand-knotted using hand-spun wool pile on a wool or cotton warp and weft foundation, coloured with natural vegetable dyes.

Authentic pieces exhibit hand-knotted wool construction, slight colour variations known as abrash, traditional geometric or floral palmette motifs, and characteristic flexible handle.

The long proportional dimensions make a Kelleh rug suitable for framing wide hallways, placing along the side of a bed, or defining central seating areas.

Vacuum regularly using suction only without a rotating brush, rotate the rug annually to ensure even wear, and arrange professional hand-washing by a specialist when required.
