A Gorgeous Victorian Silver & Cut Glass Claret Jug

19th century
Description

A stunning late Victorian silver and cut glass claret jug. The hallmarked mount is elegant and understated. The silver extends from the domed and hinged lid, to the collar and pouring lip. The handle sweeps downwards towards the base in the modernist taste. The baluster shaped glass body is finished with all over ribbing giving a tactile feel. The ribbing is cut through with beautifully cut Aster flowers, leaves and stems and has a multi point star cut to the base. A most attractive, practical example and a great gift idea. Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Claret jugs were specifically designed during the nineteenth century to serve red Bordeaux wine, allowing the liquid to aerate while catching sediment before pouring.

These vessels typically feature a blown or lead crystal glass body, decorated with cut or wheel-etched motifs, paired with a silver collar, spout, lid, and handle.

Authentic pieces generally display maker marks or assay hallmarks on the silver collar and lid, alongside hand-worked etching or cutting on the glass body.

Display the piece on a dark wood sideboard, a polished brass drinks trolley, or within a glazed cabinet alongside modern glassware for a refined presentation.

Wash the interior with warm water and mild detergent using a non-abrasive brush, and gently buff the silver exterior with a soft polishing cloth to prevent tarnishing.
