Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Georgian extending dining tables are defined by solid hardwood construction, often using Cuban or West Indian mahogany, supported by turned, reeded, or tapered legs. They utilise extension mechanisms such as additional leaves, drop-flaps, or telescoping runner systems to alter seating capacity.

High-grade dense mahogany was the predominant timber, selected for its stability and rich grain. Legs were frequently fitted with cast brass wheel castors, and extension mechanisms relied on hand-planed wooden runners or brass brassware clips.

Authentic pieces from prominent workshops like Gillows often display maker stamps on the drawer edges or top of the legs, precise hand-cut joinery, high-density timber, and distinct leg turnings characteristic of the late 18th and early 19th centuries.

A substantial mahogany table can be paired with modern or minimalist dining chairs to create a balanced contrast. Placing the table beneath contemporary pendant lighting highlights the polished timber surface in both formal and open-plan dining spaces.

The surface should be dusted regularly with a soft dry cloth and protected from heat, moisture, and direct sunlight. Periodic application of a high-grade beeswax polish maintains the finish, while spillages must be wiped immediately to prevent marking.
