Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

French giltwood mirrors from around 1840 are defined by their carved wooden frames overlayed with gesso and gold leaf. Common design elements include botanical motifs, beaded inner borders, and clean rectangular or slightly arched shapes typical of the Restoration and Louis Philippe eras.

These mirrors were constructed using timber frames, often carved pine or lime wood, coated with a ground layer of gesso (chalk and glue resin) and decorated with fine gold leaf applied using water gilding or oil gilding techniques over glass mirror plates.

Authentic pieces generally exhibit mercury or early silvered glass mirror plates showing natural light oxidisation and spotting, solid timber backboards, red or yellow bole clay underlayers visible beneath worn gold leaf, and hand-carved joinery on the frame reverse.

A mid-19th-century gilded wall mirror works as a focal point when hung above a fireplace mantelpiece, positioned over a hall console table, or paired with contemporary minimalist furnishings to create visual balance between traditional and modern elements.

Gilded surfaces must be dusted gently using a soft, dry camel-hair brush or microfibre cloth without liquid cleaners, water, or commercial polishes, as moisture can dissolve the underlying gesso and loosen the fragile gold leaf.
