19th century
For Sale by Ritas Bazaar
Description

A refined 19th-century oil on canvas depicting a young woman with powdered hair adorned with pink and blue flowers, painted in the manner of Jean-Marc Nattier. The sitter’s softly modelled features and the restrained dark background recall the intimacy and elegance of French Rococo portraiture. The painting is set within its original gilt frame enriched with foliate and floral relief. The lined canvas bears the stamp of John Reeves, Artists’ Colourman, Cheapside, London, indicating 19th-century conservation.

Historical Background

Nattier’s portraits of court ladies during the Régence and Louis XV eras shaped the visual language of French aristocratic portraiture. His influence extended well into the 19th century, when artists replicated his aesthetic to satisfy collectors interested in the Rococo revival.

Measurements

• With frame: 52 × 58 cm (20.5? × 22.8?)

• Inner image: 32.5 × 27 cm (12.8? × 10.6?)

Archival Detail
Every single antique dealer on our platform is individually approved by our internal team. We verify their professional trade history, ethical standards, and photographic quality to ensure a secure, high-standard buying environment. Upon joining, every dealer agrees to a strict 9-point code of conduct. While issues can occasionally arise, our dealers typically resolve them swiftly and directly with the buyer. In fact, since our founding in 2002, Sellingantiques has only had to step in to help resolve an issue on roughly five occasions—a true testament to the quality of our dealers and their dedication to your happiness.
Our dealers are highly experienced in packing and shipping fragile, high-value antiques. Because you are in direct contact with the dealer, you will be able to easily go through all available shipping and insurance options together to ensure your item arrives safely.
Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

Portraits painted in this style feature soft lighting, delicate facial features, and classical hairstyles, drawing inspiration from 18th-century French court portraiture.

These artworks were executed using oil paints on canvas or wooden panels and placed in timber frames coated in gesso and finished with gold leaf gilding.

Authentic pieces display natural age craquelure across the paint surface, surface oxidisation on the gilded frame, and period-appropriate stretcher construction.

An antique portrait can be mounted above a mantelpiece or sideboard, or incorporated into an eclectic gallery wall alongside contemporary works.

Keep the canvas out of direct sunlight and extreme humidity, gently dusting the frame with a dry brush while leaving paint surface cleaning to a qualified restorer.
