Large Antique Marble Statue "Discophoros* 58cm Tall Circa Mid 19th Century

19th century
Description

Exceptional Large 19th-Century Marble Sculpture “Discophoros” — 58 cm

An exceptional 19th-century hand-carved marble figure of the Discophoros (“Disc Bearer”), inspired by the celebrated Classical Greek athlete type attributed to Polykleitos. This finely executed sculpture captures the idealized male form in a graceful contrapposto stance, holding a discus in one hand and resting against a naturalistic marble support.

Carved from high-quality white marble with a soft, luminous surface, the piece displays superb anatomical modeling—the muscular tension, proportions, and subtle detailing of the torso and limbs reflect the influence of ancient Greek bronzes and the high craftsmanship typical of Italian Neoclassical workshops of the mid- to late-19th century.

The sculpture measures an impressive 58 cm in height, offering a commanding presence suitable for interior display in a gallery, library, or private collection. An outstanding example of Grand Tour-era academic sculpture.

Highlights:

• Excellent quality 19th-century carving with crisp detail

• Classical subject after Polykleitos’ Discophoros

• Beautiful polished marble surface and strong visual presence

• Substantial size at 58 cm

• Ideal for collectors of Classical sculpture, Grand Tour works, and Neoclassical art

A Discophoros is a classical representation of a discus bearer, originally conceived in ancient Greece by sculptors such as Polykleitos or Naucydes and frequently carved in marble during the 19th-century Neoclassical period.

Sculptors in the 19th century predominantly carved classical statues from solid blocks of white marble, such as Carrara marble, using hand chisels, rasps, and abrasive polishes to achieve smooth anatomical finishes.

Authentic period pieces often feature evidence of manual carving techniques on less visible areas, light surface wear, natural oxidation or patination in the crevices, and structural support struts carved directly from the same block.

Position the sculpture as a focal point on a dark wood sideboard, marble pedestal, or mantelpiece where directional lighting highlights the carved anatomical details against modern backdrop colours.

Dust the surface regularly with a dry, soft microfibre cloth, avoid liquid or chemical cleaners that can etch the stone, and maintain a stable indoor humidity level to protect the marble.
