Antiques are the ultimate green purchase. By choosing historical pieces over newly manufactured goods, you completely eliminate the carbon footprint of modern mass production while preserving exceptional, timeless craftsmanship.

A George III fold-over card table is a late 18th to early 19th-century British furniture piece designed for social card gaming. It typically features a hinged top that unfolds to double its surface area, revealing a wool cloth or baize playing interior, supported by a gate-leg or swing-leg mechanism.

Craftsmen predominantly used dense hardwoods such as mahogany and rosewood, often adorned with contrasting satinwood or boxwood stringing and marquetry. The interior playing surface was typically lined with green woven wool baize, while secondary internal structures utilised pine or oak.

Authentic pieces feature hand-cut dovetail joints on internal framing, natural age-related oxidisation on unseen timber surfaces, original brass knuckle hinges, and square tapered or turned legs characteristic of the late Georgian period.

When closed, the table functions as an elegant console or side table suitable for placement along a hallway wall or behind a sofa, styled with a table lamp and decorative ceramics. Unfolded, it creates an inviting games nook in a drawing room or study alcove.

Keep the wood away from direct sunlight and central heating sources to prevent veneer lifting or fading. Clean the wooden surfaces with high-grade beeswax polish applied sparingly, and gently brush the baize cloth with a soft bristle brush to remove dust without damaging the weave.
